Varicocele

A varicocele is an enlargement of the veins within the scrotum, similar to varicose veins that can occur elsewhere in the body. It develops when valves within these veins don't function properly, causing blood to pool and the veins to swell. It may cause a dull ache, a feeling of heaviness, or visible/palpable swelling in the scrotum, and is also a common, treatable cause of reduced fertility in men.

Treatment Methods :

Depending on the severity and symptoms, treatment options may include:

  • Laparoscopic Varicocelectomy – A minimally invasive procedure to tie off the affected veins through small incisions, commonly used for suitable cases.

  • Open Varicocelectomy (Microsurgical) – A precise surgical technique using magnification to identify and tie off the affected veins while preserving surrounding structures, often considered the gold standard.

  • Percutaneous Embolization – A non-surgical, catheter-based procedure where the affected veins are blocked from inside, performed by a radiologist in select cases.

  • Observation – For small, symptom-free varicoceles not affecting fertility, a surgeon may recommend monitoring rather than immediate intervention.

The appropriate treatment is decided after evaluation by a qualified surgeon/urologist.

Eligibility & Age

Treatment is generally considered for varicoceles causing pain, discomfort, testicular size changes, or impacting fertility, particularly when conservative monitoring hasn't resolved the symptoms.

There is no fixed age limit for varicocele treatment. Suitability depends on the patient's overall health, severity of the varicocele, symptoms, and fertility considerations.

Conclusion

Varicoceles are common and treatable, but the right approach depends on symptoms and whether fertility is a concern. Early evaluation by a qualified surgeon can help determine whether monitoring or surgery is appropriate for you.
