URSL (Uretero-Renoscopic Lithotripsy)

URSL is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to treat stones located in the ureter (the tube connecting the kidney to the bladder) or lower part of the kidney. A thin telescope (ureteroscope) is passed through the urinary tract to directly locate the stone, which is then fragmented and removed — all without any external cuts or incisions.

Treatment Methods :

Depending on the size, location, and composition of the stone, treatment options may include:

  • Laser Lithotripsy (Holmium Laser URSL) – The stone is fragmented into fine particles using laser energy, then removed or allowed to pass naturally; widely used for its precision and effectiveness.

  • Pneumatic Lithotripsy – Uses controlled mechanical energy to break the stone into smaller pieces for removal, used in select cases.

  • Stone Retrieval with Basket – Smaller stones or fragments may be directly captured and removed using a specialized retrieval basket during the procedure.

  • DJ Stent Placement – A temporary stent may be placed after the procedure to support healing and ensure smooth urine flow, removed after a few weeks.

The appropriate approach is decided after evaluation by a qualified urologist/surgeon.

Eligibility & Age

The procedure is generally considered for patients with ureteric or lower-kidney stones causing pain, obstruction, infection, or those that haven't passed naturally, particularly when the stone size or location makes it suitable for this approach.

There is no fixed age limit for URSL. Suitability depends on the patient's overall health, stone size, location, and composition, as determined through imaging.

Conclusion

URSL is a safe, minimally invasive, and effective option for suitable ureteric and kidney stones, but the right approach depends on individual stone characteristics. Early evaluation by a qualified urologist can help determine whether this procedure or an alternative is appropriate for you.
