Sebaceous Cyst

A sebaceous cyst is a small, noncancerous lump that forms under the skin when a sebaceous (oil) gland becomes blocked, causing a buildup of oily, thick material beneath the surface. It commonly appears on the scalp, face, neck, back, or chest as a slow-growing, round bump that may feel soft or firm, and can occasionally become tender, inflamed, or infected if left untreated.

Treatment Methods :

Depending on the size, location, and whether the cyst is infected, treatment options may include:

  • Surgical Excision – Complete removal of the cyst along with its capsule (sac) through a small incision, the most effective way to prevent recurrence.

  • Incision and Drainage – Used for infected or inflamed cysts to relieve pressure and drain the contents, often followed by excision once inflammation settles.

  • Minimal Excision Technique – A smaller-incision approach to remove the cyst with reduced scarring, used for suitable cases.

  • Observation – For very small, asymptomatic cysts, a surgeon may recommend monitoring rather than immediate removal.

The appropriate treatment is decided after evaluation by a qualified surgeon.

Eligibility & Age

Treatment is generally considered for cysts that are enlarging, painful, inflamed, infected, or cosmetically bothersome, particularly when they recur or interfere with daily activities.

There is no fixed age limit for sebaceous cyst treatment. Suitability depends on the patient's overall health, size and location of the cyst, and whether infection is present.

Conclusion

Sebaceous cysts are common and generally harmless, but the right treatment depends on their size, location, and whether they're causing symptoms. Early evaluation by a qualified surgeon can help determine whether monitoring or removal is appropriate for you.
