RIRS (Retrograde Intra-Renal Surgery)

RIRS is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to treat kidney stones located within the kidney itself. A thin, flexible telescope is passed through the natural urinary passage up into the kidney, allowing the surgeon to directly visualize and treat the stone — without any external cuts or incisions.

Treatment Methods :

Depending on the size, number, and location of the stones, treatment options may include:

  • Flexible Ureteroscopy with Laser Lithotripsy – A flexible scope reaches the stone within the kidney, where laser energy fragments it into fine, dust-like particles that pass naturally.

  • Stone Dusting Technique – The stone is broken down into very small fragments ("dusted") rather than retrieved whole, commonly used for softer or smaller stones.

  • Stone Retrieval with Basket – Larger fragments may be captured and removed directly using a specialized retrieval basket during the procedure.

  • DJ Stent Placement – A temporary stent is often placed after the procedure to support healing and ensure smooth urine flow, removed after a few weeks.

The appropriate approach is decided after evaluation by a qualified urologist/surgeon.

Eligibility & Age

The procedure is generally considered for patients with kidney stones that are difficult to access externally, located in complex positions within the kidney, or in cases where a scarless approach is preferred.

There is no fixed age limit for RIRS. Suitability depends on the patient's overall health, stone size, number, location, and kidney anatomy as determined through imaging.

Conclusion

RIRS is a safe, scarless, and effective option for many kidney stones, but the right approach depends on individual stone characteristics and kidney anatomy. Early evaluation by a qualified urologist can help determine whether this procedure is appropriate for you.
